The Function of Braces

Braces are designed to fix “bad bites” or malocclusions. Your teeth may be crowded, crooked, or the upper and lower arches of your jaw may not meet properly. Braces can correct all these problems by applying just the right amount of pressure to various parts of your mouth.

If your dentist has suggested braces for your teeth, you are not alone. Most people need them at some point. If you choose to opt out on getting them, you risk further oral health issues later in life such as tooth decay, gum disease, abnormal speech or chewing, wearing out your tooth enamel or developing jaw problems.

Traditional braces are made up of small brackets which are cemented to your teeth and linked by a wire. The wire is periodically tightened by either Dr. Damon W. DeArment in order to slowly shift your teeth and jaw into their correct positions. Today’s braces are better than ever, with enhanced materials and fewer needed adjustments.

Depending on the nature of your malocclusion and your oral hygiene, braces will be on your teeth anywhere from one to three years. After that, you will be fitted with a retainer which will hold your teeth in position.
