Starting orthodontic treatment is an exciting step toward a healthier, more confident smile. But whether you have chosen braces or Invisalign® clear aligner treatment, there is a learning curve as you adjust to your new routine. Fortunately, with a few easy life hacks, you can make the transition smoother and your treatment journey more comfortable. Here are some tips to help you thrive during your orthodontic care.

For Braces Wearers

  1. Build a braces-friendly toolkit.-Invest in an orthodontic care kit to keep with you at all times. Include essentials like orthodontic wax, a small mirror, a travel toothbrush, toothpaste and floss threaders. These items will come in handy for managing discomfort and maintaining oral hygiene when you are on the go.
  2. Stock up on soft foods.-The first few days after getting braces or having tightening appointments can leave your teeth feeling tender. Keep soft, easy-to-eat foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup and smoothies on hand. Avoid hard, crunchy or sticky foods that can damage your brackets and wires.
  3. Use orthodontic wax.-Orthodontic wax is a lifesaver for protecting the inside of your cheeks from irritation that may be caused by brackets and wires. Roll a small piece between your fingers and apply it to any areas causing discomfort.
  4. Rinse with salt water.-If your mouth feels sore, a warm saltwater rinse can soothe irritation and promote healing. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds.
  5. Master proper cleaning techniques.-Braces require extra care when brushing and flossing. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and consider investing in an interdental brush or water flosser for cleaning around brackets and wires. Please do not be tempted to skip flossing – even floss threaders can make the job much easier.

For Invisalign® Aligner Wearers

  1. Always carry your case. - To avoid misplacing your aligners, keep their case with you at all times. Never wrap them in napkins or leave them loose in your bag – it is all too easy for them to get lost or accidentally thrown away.
  2. Clean aligners daily. - Rinse your aligners every time you remove them to prevent bacteria buildup. Use a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water to clean them gently. Avoid hot water, as it can warp the plastic.
  3. Use chewies for a better fit. - Chewies are small, rubber-like tools that help your aligners fit snugly over your teeth. Bite down on them for a few minutes each day to ensure proper alignment and maximize treatment progress.
  4. Plan your meals and snacks. - With Invisalign treatment, you will need to remove your aligners every time you eat or drink (except for water). To minimize time without your aligners, plan your meals and snacks strategically and remember to brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in.
  5. Stay hydrated. - Wearing aligners can sometimes leave your mouth feeling dry. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay comfortable and maintain optimal oral health.

Our experience with Shenandoah Valley Orthodontics has been truly memorable. The Invisalign journey wasn't always easy, and there were definitely some challenging moments along the way. However, the team was supportive, professional, and encouraging throughout the entire process. Over time, wearing Invisalign became second nature—my daughter often forgot she even had them on. The results have been well worth it, and we're very grateful for the excellent care and attention we received. Highly recommend Shenandoah Valley Orthodontics to anyone considering orthodontic treatment!
